Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 : From an iPad 1 to Galaxy Tab 2

So the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 just came out this morning ( April 22, 2012), and I had not planned on buying it but I was down at my local best buy store and played with it just to see what it was and loved it! Let me say I used to have all apple stuff, apple computer, iphone, ipad, etc.

Over the last year my apples have rotted, went bad and needed to be replaced. Instead of paying high dollar for all new apple stuff I went back to a windows PC, an Andorid Galaxy S2 phone, still had the iPad but it was in need of replacement.

The screen while not a retina display like the iPad is still clear enough for me. After all I'm not holding this inches from my face. if you do you get a chance to play with 1 of these before you buy go to the movies app on the device and play the life demo to see how clear and crisp the display is.

It quickly synced up with my Google account and I was already able to start downloading apps from the play store within minutes of getting it turned on.

So far the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is excellent. It feels like it's built well, the back is not as fancy as the Galaxy S2 phone however I plan on getting a case for this so the back battery panel to me doesn't matter much.

I'll update this later after I get more time to play with it, so far though for $250 this is a great deal. I also played with the Kindle Fire and the Blackberry playbook both which were available for $199, but I opted to spend the $50 more for the Samsung as I've been impressed with Samsung quality over the years. (Currently my TV's, blu ray players, computer monitor, phone and now tablet are all samsung brand. They make good products in my opinion.)

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

--UPDATE 8 hours later--

I used the GPS on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 earlier and google navigation/maps to get me to the hardware store. Ok I didn't NEED it but I wanted to test it out. I found that you MUST have internet for google maps to give you directions, I had a hotspot in my car so I turned it on and navigation worked perfect. If you don't have wifi you can still use GPS, it does lock on fast however it can't query to get you directions. If you used an offline GPS program like navigon or something that would do the trick, but YES gps is accurate and fast.

I also used the bluetooth on this to stream music from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to my car, quality was excellent.

Apps and stuff, so far every app I have tried is compatible with the exception of one, and I can't remember what that one was so it was one I really didn't use much at all I guess. I have put a few games on to test it, so far so good and still no lag.

Hows the keyboard? It comes with stock ICS keyboard and it works well, if you start typing fast there is a tiny lag between hearing the click of the feedback and seeing the character appear, however all letters make it without any vanishing. I am looking for another keyboard though as spelling isn't built in it appears... I am probably switching to Swiftkey or swype both which appear compatible with the device.

Also, the IR Blaster = awesome! I was going to buy a $100 harmony remote for my entertainment system, well this Galaxy Tab 2 has an IR blaster built right in and the application for it is simple to configure. Less then 3 minutes I had it set to turn my TV on, control my bose sound system and also control my Tivo HD and Blu Ray player. Very slick!

More to come, if you have questions on how this works please leave them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them quickly. Also, if you find this review helpful please make sure to mark it as such!

--UPDATE--

Morning after, do I regret buying it? Nope, still a fantastic device and I'll tell you a few more things I found out.

    1. I use Dropbox on my home computer and put the app on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. I also use a tivo at home and thought about how could I get my shows on my tivo to my computer then to my tablet? Well I use TivoToGo to transfer shows to my computer, then I place them in a drop box folder and they sync automatically to my dropbox account.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 have an app (free and paid versions) called "Folder Sync" and I have that set to every hour check my drop box Tivo folder and download any latest tv shows my computer has copied. This means that in the morning when I leave for work my tablet has all my shows from the previous night I didn't get to watch on it so I can for instance watch one or two on my lunch break, without having to have a wifi connection at work!

    2. Need to make a phone call? Unfortunately the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 doesn't have phone support. However Skype works great with both video calls and audio calls. You can pay for a phone number from skype (it's cheap if you wanted it) and actually treat this like a phone assuming you have wifi wherever you are. I did try google voice app, that will not allow you to make calls and use the android tablet as a handset, it instead asks you what phone in your account it should call.

ASUS Transformer TF300 T-B1-BL Make you forget The Ipad

The ASUS Transformer TF300 T-B1-BL is really an excellent android tablet. Tremendously ultra powerful not to mention useful. Numerous purists definitely will assert typically the showcase isn't actually properly, and yet it is foolish. That is the dazzling showcase even in the event it again accidents in immediate need of superior pixel count up to choose from.

Typically the functioning provides great improvements over typically the iphone 3, this can be a delightful piece of equipment it provides specific capability to go towards a key board starting point not to mention "transform" towards a netbook. Intermix who with the help of it' 's affordable not to mention Fruit might be outdone not to mention wasted. Pay for it again nowadays.

I just bought The ASUS Transformer TF300 for my wife, subsequent to having to pay a time together with the tablets, We have all thought he would choose yet another one for the purpose of professionally. Ease of use, efficiency, portability not to mention fantastic capability enable it to be an increased decision in my circumstances as opposed to your netbook.

The ASUS Transformer TF300 gps watch features naff, and yet upon processed well-built not to mention I'm it may keep going quite a while, I did so choose some leatherette claim regarding it despite the fact. As I beforehand declared, typically the panel is fabulous essential everyone else reveals. May very well lousy eyes, and yet I can also naturally read the panel kept in mind however extensive sun-generated shimmering on.

I just certified typically the TRACKING aided by the equipment tethered towards your iphone 4 it works out perfectly. Wifi response is extremely fantastic, it again seen further staff near my house as opposed to each and every piece of equipment I just have as well as found extensive robustness connected to my since i dismissed it again all the way up, regardless of where I use it again their home.

I just surely could comfortably conect towards your significant desktop computer with the aid of DLNA not to mention watch typically the beats not to mention clips May very well stashed away furthermore there. There can be litterally excessive elements on that tablet towards report in person not to mention I've met I just had not perhaps even seen these individuals but still. A long way, absolutely nothing We have all sampled to do with it again it is retarded it again downwards.

Typically the browser shut down twice for the purpose of certainly no valid reason not to mention found a difficult time rebounding all the way up. In my opinion that is the concern with the help of ICS not to mention are likely to be fastened aided by the following that renovate. Even, typically the concerning panel ASUS key board is really glitchy.

I just was basically usually shooting backspace whereas penning longer text messages mainly because it would definitely misspell (even when I just arrive at an appropriate vital) not to mention would definitely position schemes having numerous written text. I just had not sampled typically the Search engine key board but still considering that I just thought he would solely take advantage of the connect from now on for the purpose of rather long text messages.

One additional word. We have all chosen a particular iphone previously with bought a particular iphone4 mainly because was already released. Typically the Fruit OPERATING-SYSTEM might be further polished as opposed to Google android, and yet Google android seems to have can be purchased especially a great deal as its humble origins not to mention I feel it may emulate IOS very soon.

And yet, its enough nowadays right now towards comprehensively have fun with such medications as well as assigned everybody an explanation towards throw away a lot of our apple iphones not to mention go together with Samsung Galaxy S's to boot.

ASUS Transformer Prime TF201 : The current best tablet

I've extensively used a lot of tablets, due to both longtime interest in mobile technology, and my line of work.

To give you an idea of my frame of reference, I've either owned or used the following tablets: Ipad 2 (owned), HP Touchpad (owned - 2011 firesale!), Motorola Xoom / Galaxy Tab 10.1, LG G, original Asus Transformer (work).

Heck, I've owned the following Windows Mobile / PocketPC devices from back in the day - HP Jornada, Toshiba e800. My phone is the iPhone 4.

With that said, this is one of the best tech gadget I've ever owned. The unanimous rave industry reviews (and very positive end user reviewers, even taking wifi issues etc. into account) aren't wrong.

    * BUILD AND FORM FACTOR- evocative of but actually feels higher quality than the Ipad 2 and Macbook Air, which is a minor miracle at this price point. Beautifully machined aluminum, minimalist but not cold. The resolution of the screen is the best out of any current tablet, and can be crazily bright enough that it is useable outdoors in sunlight. It's definitely a fingerprint magnet though.

    * COLOR - for those deciding between the gray or champagne, I received the champagne, and I actually called to confirm that I received the right one. It's much more silver than gold, it's basically silver aluminum with some gold highlights when the light catches it the right way. This is *exactly* what I wanted - it's reminiscent of the classic aluminum MacBook Pros, but with a touch of warmth from the gold. In short - it's not very gold at all.

    * PROCESSOR - the Tegra 3 quad core processor is noticeably snappy, making the whole experience (even with Honeycomb) feel next gen. I've been getting great battery life, ~ 10-12 hours of normal mixed used, on balanced setting.

With the dock, you're at 18+ hours. The NVIDIA fifth "stealth core" does its job seamlessly. It just works. For a quad core tablet with blazing power, this is again pretty mind-bending and next-gen. Is a quad core necessary? Strictly speaking, no.

The Tegra 2 / OMAP / Snapdragon tablets do just fine, for the most part (although the un-overclocked Touchpad is noticeably slow), but every non ipad tablet lagged behind the iPad 2 in terms of real world performance (opening menus, browsing, launching apps). This isn't because Apple's processor is faster, but rather because if the sheer level of optimization between Apple hardware and software, which is industry-leading.

With the Tegra 3 processor, though, this is the first non Apple tablet that both objectively is, and also noticeably feels, faster, more responsive, and more powerful than the iPad 2. It just brute forces past all of the Apple optimizations. For me, that is huge, especially if I'm going to be spending over $400 on something. Slowly but surely, more and more apps are optimizing for quad core (especially games), but even without that, I'd get a quad core for the general performance benefits alone, as it translates across every app.

    * OS / SW - I really like the iOS UI for phones, it's simple yet powerful, but for a tablet it's always just felt incredibly limiting / frustrating / slightly condescending. I even prefer WebOS to it. Android Honeycomb is a nice balance between power, customization and being relatively easy to pick up, just perfect for the tablet form factor.

My 2 year old toddler figured out how to use it in about 20 seconds (similar to WebOS and iOS). That being said, I'm looking forward to ICS, which should make things even more stable (HC still crashes occasionally)and uniform. The fact that the Prime gets an ICS in a month or two is fantastic.

The pre-loaded Asus apps are relatively minimal and unobtrusive, and some actually are quite nice, such as the Asus cloud. Polaris Office is solid. The Android Market could be improved though, especially in terms of sorting and organization. Finding the right app can be a bit of a crapshoot.

CONS: Basically the same nits as others have pointed out.

    * SPEAKER: the rear-facing speaker placement is a bit dumb, because it gets covered up relatively easily by your hands or when you set it down. However, you can still hear it even if it's completely covered, it's pretty loud, and it's located where the tablet tapers inwards so it doesn't get completely covered by a flat surface when setting it down.

I don't mind the lack of a second speaker per se, as you hardly get stereo sound from any of the other tablets that have two speakers. I would say the sound quality of the Prime is on par with any other tablet, but it is just a bit easier to muffle. A jawbone jambox bluetooth speaker or the like works beautifully to supplement this android tablet. It's certainly not needed, but it's a nice addition.

    * CHARGER - the proprietary charger really annoys me. Until Asus comes out with more accessories, I'm basically stuck with using my one charging cord. Even charging via the dock requires the proprietary connector. It's not worth deducting a star for (at least for me), because it's more of an annoyance in light of how great the rest of the device is, but sheesh.

    * PRODUCT LAUNCH - for a $21 billion company of 110,000+ employees, Asus still can't do a good product launch to save its life. This doesn't detract from the end product per se, but it's worth mentioning because so many pre-orders (on Amazon and elsewhere) were bungled or delayed. Asus is starting to consistently put out really great products, but in order to get to the "next level"(Sony, Apple etc.) in the eyes of the average consumer, they're going to really need to work on marketing and sales execution.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1-Inch, Wi-Fi)

My mom bought last year's Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 model last week and I fell in love with it, so I bought the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Inch. This is my 4th day with it and I absolutely love it. I've been wanting a tablet for over a year(I love tech toys) and finally couldn't take messing around with one that wasn't mine so I had to buy one.

I have a 17" laptop that only gets 1.5 hrs on a charge and wanted something smaller that I could do easy internet stuff like twitter, facebook, surfing, and listening to internet radio, podcasts, and music that was smaller and more mobile then my ginormous laptop. While shopping around I essentially looked at mid-priced android tablets, mostly because of my angst toward apple thanks to the awfulness of itunes software.

The other tablet that really caught my eye was the Asus Transformer TF300. You can do an easy google search to see where the transformer shines where the galaxy doesn't and vice versa. Ultimately storage space wasn't a huge deal for me and I really have no need for an hdmi out.

What won me over the Asus Transformer TF300 is the display of the Samsung Galaxy Tab and it is night and day difference for me. Since browsing the internet is 90% of what I'll use a tablet for a great display, where samsung truly shines, was worth more to me then a better speced out transformer. For anyone looking to buy a new 10.1" tablet definitely give the transformer a look. I also would suggest looking at the Motorola Xoom.

Pros:
- size, probably one of the smaller Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1" mid level tablets
- display is bright and crisp, text is very easy to read even when I have screen brightness all the way turned down
- infrared sensor that can be used to control your home entertainment center (a very nice option if you don't have a cool awesome logitech harmony remote)
- battery life has been great also among the top of the midlevel tablets(do a google search)
Cons:
- long battery charge time, not a big deal as I'm mostly going to recharge at night
- no stock hdmi out
- the wtf so tiny charging cord, I mean really who wants a short charging cord? Makes no sense to me
- no standard usb port, instead they have an applelike proprietary port
- feels like for the price there should be some kind of hdmi out and 32 gb of hard drive space instead of 16

Because of the last con I can't give this android tablet 5 stars, instead it gets 4.
