‘My money’s on PC, mobile, tablets’ – Bleszinski on Xbox One u-turn

Cliff Bleszinski has penned a sizeable blog to expand on some of his recent Twitter statements regarding Xbox One’s anti-used policies. The former Epic Games designer believes that Microsoft’s preowned fee was a positive step for the industry, which regularly loses sales to retail chains such as GameStop and its ‘revolving door’ trade-in policy.

In the blog, Bleszinski slammed the knee-jerk reactions of what he called the, “the internet pitchfork mob who can only see 6 inches in front of their face without thoughtfully analyzing a situation,” and suggested that quick-to-ridicule gamers aren’t seeing the bigger picture of why Microsoft wanted to curb used games sales to begin with.
The designer then went on to share his own experience with the Gears of War 3 launch party, following years of development and effort, only to see a GameStop leaflet asking people to trade it back in almost instantly.
“Cut to flying home [after the event] and people start sending me pictures of the extremely well put together finely printed leaflets at the Gears 3 launch that said “Trade in this game by November 6th and get more than you normally would on your trade in!”

“Motherfucker. We had done a lot of work to keep the disc in tray, but those retail practices are deliberately set up to create a revolving door of game trade in. Folks say “Yeah, but Gamestop helps out a lot of games by pushing them!” to which I quote Chris Rock “Yeah, they’re like the uncle who paid for your college…but molested you.”
“Capitalism? Sure. It’s a free market and they’ve got every right to do this. I accept that. However when I see studio after studio closing and the aforementioned alluded titles failing I know something’s got to change. But Cars and Movies and Books haven’t had this problem, why are games different?”
He admitted that simply blaming used games for problems in the industry comes across as ‘whiney’, but he spelled out what he believes to be the future of the console market now that Xbox One will not charge its users to play used discs.
“So here’s what’s going to happen now that Microsoft has largely matched Sony’s (well played) move at E3. The shift to digital is still going to happen (FOR BOTH) but it’s going to be slow and subtle. Suddenly more DLC will be made available.
“More microstransactions will appear. And Day One Digital will (hopefully) be cheaper and will have so many added bells and whistles that consumers (with reliable enough bandwidth) will have a hard time refusing the tasty downloadable edition over the disc based one.”
He added, “I’ve said before if I worked at Microsoft I would not only POSITIVELY motivate users to go digital but also offer their own trading system in which they give you MORE money for your game than Gamestop and sell the used games for LESS than Gamestop. Include a Netflix style mailing system and move along your merry way by engaging the customer as opposed to treating them like criminals.
On Microsoft’s rocky ride over the Xbox One reveal, Blesinzki continued, “Years from now college courses are going to be taught in proper messaging and they’re going to use Microsoft’s E3 delivery as a worst case scenario,” and added, “I’ll admit, the once every 24 hour check was pretty silly.
“Customers can smell from a mile away when you’re treating them like children, peeking your head into their bedroom on a regular basis in an attempt to catch them doing something. Here’s the thing about Steam. It doesn’t FORCE you to be online. The ecosystem of Steam is so brilliant, from the community, to the summer sales, to the indie games, that you WANT to get online.
“My money is on the PC, mobile and tablet PCs for the near future. I wandered around E3 looking at (too many) fantastic games shaking my head and worrying about how many are going to be deemed a failure due to the fact that yes, it may have sold 4 million copies, but it cost too much to make and market, so it was a wash.”
What do you make of the above? Is GameStop’s aggressive trade-in strategy denting the income of studios, are PC, mobile and tablets the way forward? Let us know below.

TabletKiosk Sahara Slate PC i575

On June 19, 2013, TabletKiosk announced that two new models had been added to its flagship line of 12.1" enterprise-grade Tablet PCs. Of the two, the new Sahara Slate PC i575 is powered by a 3rd generation Intel Core vPro processor, offering improved performance, greatly enhanced battery life, and a number of hardware embedded security features. The lower-end Sahara Slate PC i535 uses an Intel Celeron 1047UE, but otherwise largely offers the same enhancements. This is major news for TabletKiosk and its enterprise customers, as both new models represent major technological steps forward while completely preserving compatibility with existing accessories and peripherals -- a major consideration for enterprise customers.
The new models are welcome news for enterprise customers as well as anyone in the market for a competent enterprise-grade Windows tablet. When RuggedPCReview.com examined the Sahara Slate PC i500 in January 2013, we found it "a very sensible, useful and practical design" but cautioned that its microprocessor dated back to what Intel now calls the "previous" (read "initial") generation of modern Core processors, and that third generation "Ivy Bridge" chips would "offer more speed, faster graphics, and better economy." And that is exactly what TabletKiosk now makes available with the new models.
What does that mean for customers? We have not had hands-on with the new unit yet, but RuggedPCReview has benchmarked other products with the exact same Core i7-3517UE processor that powers the new Sahara i575, and so based on those results, here are our estimates of the performance users can expect from TabletKiosk's new top-of-the-line Sahara Slate PC i575:

TabletKiosk Sahara new vs. old
PERFORMANCE COMPARISON TabletKiosk TabletKiosk
Model i575 i500
Processor Type: Intel Intel Core i7 Intel Core i7
Processor Model 3517UE vPro 640LE

CM FPU est. 39,300 27,794
CM MEM est. 34,000 23,090
CM D2D est. 2,100 1,604
CM OGL est. 6,000 2,266
Overall CrystalMark est. 169,000 104,435
Yes, a big improvement. And particularly impressive given that the new 3rd gen processor actually runs at lower base clock speeds and has a lower maximum thermal design power. Yet, it's significantly more powerful, and it is much more power-efficient. We don't have estimated battery life yet, but the difference between old and new should be quite substantial. Overall bottomline figures will depend on the choice of storage, with rotating media generally significantly slower than solid state disks.
The new processor, of course, is only part of the story. TabletKiosk took this opportunity to improve the Sahara Slate PC not only on the CPU front, but in several other areas as well. Maximum RAM has doubled to 16GB, and as any Windows user knows, more RAM is always better. Maximum hard disk storage has doubled as well, to a full terabyte. That would have been unthinkable just a few short years ago, but now there are many scenarios where this much storage is almost mandatory. Those going with an SSD also have options up to 480GB.
Ancillary benefits of the switch to third generation Core processor technology include native USB 3.0 support, DDR3L support, and SATA III support. That, again, means more speed, higher performance, lower power. On the graphics side, while Intel began experimenting with integrated graphics in the initial generation of Core processors, it really wasn't until the "Ivy Bridge" third generation that everything fell into place, and the new Slate PC i575 benefits from that. We're still not talking the equivalent of a discrete third party graphics card, but quite close to it. And the DisplayPort video-out drives external monitor resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 pixel, and with cable lengths up to 50 feet.
As for the i535 Celeron-based version, it's a viable alternative. While Celeron processors used to be Intel's low-end and largely to be avoided, that has changed in recent processor generations. Celeron's are now based on the same lithography as Core processors, and often look like somewhat stripped versions of Core i3 chips, i.e. more than good enough for many applications. Like Core i3 chips, though, Celerons do not have the Turbo Boost feature, and other Intel technologies are missing, so customers should examine what they may or may not need. >For a side-by-side comparison of the two processors available in TabletKiosk's latest.
But there's more yet. When we examined an older Sahara i500 just a few months ago, we were a bit disappointed not to find any cameras. Well, TabletKiosk fixed that. The new i575 has a 2mp front camera from video conferencing, and a 5mp rear-camera for documentation, and that one can shoot full 1080p HD video.
And TabletKiosk thought of another seemingly little thing that may well matter in many applications: the new models have a true serial interface controller and DB9 serial port. While there are USB-to-serial converters, USB and serial are inherently different in the way they provide power (USB uses +5V, serial +5V, +12V, and -12V) and that can pose problems because converters may not support the voltages properly, and/or they may also not have the proper hardware flow control for a particular serial interface application. With a true serial controller, that's never an issue.
The picture below shows the backside of the i575 with its docking connector port in the center, the dual battery compartments, and the rear-camera with its LED illuminator.
Just as important as what has changed in the new i575 is what hasn't changed. The design, form factor, and overall configuration remain the same. That means there's virtually complete backward compatibility with the significant number of older Sahara Slate PCs deployed out there in the enterprise. Accessories, peripherals, docks all stay the same, and nothing is obsolete. That's a BIG issue in enterprise deployments where there's nothing more annoying than to have to replace the whole ancillary infrastructure for every new model.
One thing that certainly didn't have to be replaced in the i500 Series is the AFFS+ 12-inch display. It is large enough for real work, and it has a perfect viewing angle in all directions. It uses what TabletKiosk calls its SUNBRITE sunlight enhancement technology where a degree of sunlight reflection enhances screen brightness. The i500 we recently tested had that display and it was certainly very readable outdoors, and its semi-matte surface made for very little reflection.
What also continues is the wide range of available touch and digitizer technologies. Projected capacitive multi-touch is available for the Sahara. But customers can also order resistive touch. Or they may opt for a dual mode panel with an active Wacom pen and either projected capacitive touch or resisitive touch. And unlike many Windows tablets, there is no bulky bezel around the screen for fingers to bump into; the flush-mounted glass extends well beyond the perimeter of the LCD.
Overall, like they do with their smaller eo tablet, TabletKiosk covers a lot of ground with their newly enhanced Sahara platform. Not only is the Sahara available in a wide range of performance (and price) levels, but TabletKiosk future-proofs its products by upgrading them with state-of-the-art technologies as they come along.
As for pricing, the new i575 Intel Core i7-based model starts at US$2,149 (4GB RAM, 500GB HD), reasonable for this class of machine. If cost is an issue, the Celeron 1047UE-powered i535 version (2GB RAM, 320GB HD) starts at US$1,749.

Work Hard and Stay Portable with Windows 8 Tablets

Mobile devices have fundamentally altered where and how we use technology. The concept of the traditional office and 40-hour work week have faded away because people can stay connected and get things done virtually anywhere and any time.
Smartphones are convenient for checking email and performing basic tasks, but too small for any real productivity. Tablets, on the other hand, are large enough to work on and have a variety of unique advantages over laptop PCs, but still face challenges when it comes to running the software users need, or keeping data synced between the tablet and a PC.

Benefits of tablets

The tablet is an ideal mobile computing device. Tablets are exceptionally light and thin compared to traditional laptop PCs, and most are svelte even by Ultrabook or netbook standards. A few ounces can make a huge difference when you’re lugging a device around all day.
Tablets are more convenient to use on the go than a laptop PC. Laptops are cumbersome—they need a surface to sit on and have to be opened up to be used. A tablet is flat, and it can be held in one hand. A touchscreen display makes it easy to navigate the device and open apps even while walking down the hall.
Exceptional battery life is another hallmark of tablets. Most laptops can only survive a few hours at best, and even Ultrabooks top out around 7 hours on average. But, most tablets can make it through an entire workday on a single charge, freeing you up from power cords.

Tablet challenges

Despite the advantages, tablets face a number of obstacles when it comes to business productivity. Most tablets use a mobile operating system like iOS or Android. They can only run apps that are specifically developed for the mobile OS, which means they can’t run the software businesses rely on, like custom applications or productivity suites like Microsoft Office.
The ports and slots available on a tablet vary widely from one device to the next, but from a hardware perspective most tablets are very limited. A USB port or SD memory card slot are useful for expanding the limited storage capacity of the android tablet, or simplifying the process of moving data to and from the device.
Tablets running a mobile OS also can’t join a Windows network domain. That means they can’t be managed with Active Directory and Group Policy like desktop and laptop PCs, and they can’t be monitored or protected using the same tools the business is already using. They either require additional applications and effort, or they’re just ignored and act as rogue devices that expose the company to risk.

Best of both worlds: Windows 8 tablets

Tablets running Windows 8 Pro straddle the line between PC and tablet, and let users enjoy the benefits of a tablet without sacrificing productivity or security. The beauty of a Windows 8 tablet like the Dell Latitude 10 is that it is simultaneously a Windows PC and a tablet.
The new tiled interface of Windows 8 provides a slick experience equivalent to iOS and Android mobile devices. There are tens of thousands of apps available in the Windows Store—games, entertainment, productivity, social networking, and other apps designed specifically for a mobile, touchscreen experience.
A Windows 8 tablet also has something that other tablets are missing, though—a desktop mode that runs legacy Windows software. That means you can still use Microsoft Office or your custom CRM tool on your tablet. All of your software and data is right there with you no matter where you are.
With an optional docking station, you can just snap the tablet into place while working at your desk, and it is functionally identical to a traditional desktop or laptop PC. The docking station keeps that tablet charged, and instantly connects the device to an external monitor via HDMI, to a wired gigabit Ethernet network connection, and to other devices like a full-size keyboard, mouse, and printer via USB. While using the device in this configuration, you can forget that it’s a tablet at all.
When it’s time to go to a meeting down the hall, or visit a client, or go home for the day, though, you can just take the tablet out of the docking station and be on your way. Unlike having a separate tablet running a mobile OS, you don’t have to jump through hoops to find compatible apps or ensure your data is synced because everything is still there on your PC. It’s just much more convenient to take with you or work on the go than it would be with a desktop or laptop PC.
A Windows 8 tablet can be joined to a Windows network domain and managed using Active Directory and Group Policy. It lets you monitor and enforce security policies, and manage access using the same software and tools you use for the rest of your desktop and laptop PCs.

The tablet is the PC

Don’t waste money buying both a laptop and a tablet, and don’t waste time debating which is better for mobile productivity. A Dell Latitude 10 is both a tablet and a full Windows 8 PC. It gives you the best of both worlds and lets you jump on the tablet revolution without sacrificing productivity.

A third of American adults now own tablet computers

Does it seem like everyone you know is getting a tablet computer? There's a reason for that. They have been. Tablets are getting more popular than ever. According to the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project, over a third of American adults now own a tablet.

tablet-growth
By Pew's latest survey numbers, "A third (34%) of American adults ages 18 and older own a tablet computer like an iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google Nexus, or Kindle Fire—almost twice as many as the 18% who owned a tablet a year ago."
While tablet computers aren't new, their popularity only dates back to April 3, 2010 when Apple introduced the iPad. By May 2010, older tablets and the iPad reached 3% of the adult market. Not three years later, the number of tablet owners has increased eleven-fold.
Who are these people? Pew's numbers reveal few surprises:
  • Demographic groups most likely to own tablets include:
  • Those living in households earning at least $75,000 per year (56%), compared with lower income brackets
  • Adults ages 35-44 (49%), compared with younger and older adults
  • College graduates (49%), compared with adults with lower levels of education
The Pew survey did find one oddity: "Unlike smartphones, which are most popular with younger adults ages 18-34, we see the highest rates of tablet ownership among adults in their late thirties and early forties. In fact, almost half (49%) of adults ages 35-44 now own a tablet computer, significantly more than any other age group. Adults ages 65 and older, on the other hand, are less likely to own a tablet (18%) than younger age groups." In other words, when it comes to tablets, Generation X--not the Baby Boomers nor the Millennials, aka Generation Y--are the ones driving tablet sales.
Users are only going to continue to buy tablets in ever greater numbers. Indeed, market research firm NPD claims that by 2017, tablets will outsell notebooks by six to one.  Today, IDC has found that global tablet shipments grew by 142.4-percent year-over-year during the first quarter of 2013, and that "tablets have shown no sign of slowing down."
A big part of what's driving this explosive growth, according to IDC, are inexpensive Android devices with screen sizes of about 7 inches. Looking ahead, IDC predicts that smaller tablets, such as the Nexus 7 and the Apple iPad mini, will have 63% of the market by 2017.
At the same time, PC sales continue to head into the toilet. Indeed, by IDC's count the last sales quarter, global PC shipments have plunged into their worst drop in a generation.
It's no wonder that Microsoft appears to be aiming Windows 8.1 at tablets and other mobile devices rather than making disgruntled Windows 8 desktop users happy. The future belongs to tablets.
Which tablets are people buying? Pew doesn't look into this, but many other research firms follow this. ABI Research states that "The tide is definitely turning toward Android-based tablets, though Apple will not slouch as it feels the competition approaching."
IDC found that Android-based tablets are already edging ahead of iPads, 48.8-percent to 46-percent. ABI Research senior practice director Jeff Orr wouldn't go that far but he would say, "It's inevitable that Android tablets will overtake iOS-powered slates, though we see no single vendor challenging Apple’s dominance anytime soon."
As for would-be challengers to Android and Apple, there really aren't any. Microsoft with Windows 8 and RT is the closest thing to a viable alternative, but even combined their sales lag far behind tablet market leaders, Apple, Samsung, ASUS, and Amazon.
We're well on our way to a world where tablets, and not PCs, will be the most popular computing device and the real battle for market supremacy will be between Apple and Google's Android allies. No one else at this point—Firefox, Microsoft, Ubuntu—appear to be in the running for top tablet honors.

Vizio finally launches its 11.6-inch "Windows 8 Tablet PC"

Way back in January during CES 2013, Vizio announced plans to launch its first Windows 8 tablet. Today, the company finally put the tablet on sale, over five months after it was first revealed, but now the specs on the tablet look less impressive.
Vizio's website has the detail on the tablet, which has the dull brand name "Windows 8 Tablet PC." The product, which has the model number MT11X-A1, has an 11.6 inch display with a resolution of 1920x1080. It's one of the few Windows 8 tablets that has AMD's Z-60 processor inside, which is powerful enough to support the higher display resolutions. It also contains AMD's Radeon HD 6250 on-board GPU.
The tablet comes with 2 GB of RAM, 64 GB of on-board storage, and a two megapixel front-facing camera. The 1.8 pound tablet supports Microsoft Signature, which means that it will ship with no additional third party software, or "junkware" already installed. Its expected battery life is up to five hours, which is about on par with many Windows 8 tablets.
Vizio is now selling its first Tablet PC on its website for $599.99. So far, there's no word if the company will release any Intel-based tablets, nor if the company will join in launching smaller seven or eight inch tablets.

Ventura Watch

The Ventura watch company was established by Pierre and Yuko Nobs in 1989. In Ventura’s opening year, one of the first products “watch Flemming Bo Hansen” was selected to become part of the permanent design collection at the Museum of Modern Art “MoMA” in New York. Three years later in 1992, the same “LED watch” received the Red Dot “Best of Best” Design Award.  Ever since, numerous Ventura timepieces have been granted international awards for their outstanding design: most recently with the GOOD DESIGN (Japan) and the Red Dot “Best of Best” awards for the new SPARC MGS in 2011 and 2012. 745TDBanty 130621
Ventura also won a Red Dot 2012 award for the belt collection “Gents & Belts”. Working with accomplished designers, unrestrained by the limitations of using standardized movements, Ventura has developed and defined an archetypical design language of its own. At the Baselworld 2006, Ventura presented a concept-study of a “future timepiece”, wrongly purported by the media as “the new Ventura watch”.
Ever since, the inquiries for the “Sigma MGS” persisted and we finally asked Designer Paolo Fancelli to consolidate the basic shape with the larger movements-dimensions; he ended up with a completely new, more modern and fresh design. For all those, for whom the SPARC MGS is too chiseled and angular, the new SPARC Sigma MGS with its refined soft, organic shape sets a distinct counterpoint. It is very comfortable to wear even on smaller wrists.
Traditionally, Ventura introduces a new model with a “Limited Launch Edition” of 50 pcs milled piece-by-piece with 5-axis CNC machines at very high cost, delivered ahead of the regular Series made with production tools and. Every piece is individually numbered and the cases are marked with a red Ventura “V”. The limited launch Edition of the SPARC Sigma MGS can be ordered as of now. For more information we invite you to follow the link bellow.

Faceless LED Watch

The function of this watch is its imaginative decor favored by many couples one of the reasons. One user said: “Now we have cell phones, wear watches to tell time is not a longer simply, the choice is a fashion, beauty, personality. And selling LED watch is a ‘trend’. ”
And another Submarine (and “Shinshoku”) style really watch to see some of the challenges of time intellect, this stainless steel band watch The panel has 29 holes with LED lights, LED and etc to indicate each period, instead of the original watch pointer. 12 green lights representing the hr, three green lights each and the equivalent of 15 minutes, may stand for 15, 30, 45 minutes, plus 14 representatives with the yellow light for 1 instant, to some sort of settled now naturally, really have to take great effort. Of course, that time with the color light the way sentimental, it is easy to feel the passage of time, at night is also more simple to use.
In addition, because most of internet selling LED watches are generally genuine non-original, so the purchase price is relatively affordable, and the most expensive an individual, two hundred dollars, the trend of fashion for those who seek high cost. Nevertheless, despite the wide number of online LED watches, but due to the special design, like an ordinary watch to visually begin to see the time as there is usually some difficulty, for those who often drive or maybe a strong sense of time for people who choose or first LED watch some consideration. “Safety first, after just about all, ah, who is also considered to drive when looking at lamp to count the time? ”
.
Peacocking. There is a grouping of people who call independently the Pick-Up Artists that swear by this procedure called Peacocking. They claim that like this, they can get any sort of girls to walk up to them and strike up a conversation. I don’t know set up method actually works, but these Pick-Up Artists love to wear stuff like the Faceless LED Watch right after they decide to “peacock”.
This works for both men and women by the way. As opposed to just to pick up girls. It is a method to start a conversation, an ice-breaker some would claim. So peacocking is basically wearing stuff intriguing like the Faceless LED Watch so that the other party who wishes to talk to you have something to share with you. It is far easier to say: “Nice watch! Where did the user gets that? ” than it can be to say “Hi, i am Scaredy-Cat. Would you be my friend? “.
Considering these community of Pick-Up Artists are growing, what was once uncommon are becoming more and more common. You will discover people wearing goggles, top hats or maybe a pink furry coat on the club. That is exactly how come you should get this rare blue LED Faceless Watch. Unless of course, you want to be stereotyped as a Pick-Up Artist.
Peacocking theoretically is great, however not we are all so comfortable wearing something so outrageous like a pink furry coat which makes this Faceless LED See so perfect. It will immediately create led watch blue colored led equipment and lighting. 745TDBanty 130620

Tokyo Flash-RPM LED Watch

Watches are the best friend for time bugs, as there are watches less than a dollar and they are watches which cost more than the price of your house. There are a lot of designs and plenty of companies, the most stylish ones till now which i am familiar with is Tokyo Flash. They make watches that seem to be stylish bracelets where as, these are very high-tech watches.
Recently Tokyo flash has given an opportunity to their fans to give them ideas and designs of their dream watches. One of the fans came to be a really great designer and he came up with an exceptionally elegant design which attracted me at the first glance. This led watch is named as RPM watch it has great features and at the first look you might be worried that where the time is displayed. No worries it is right before your eyes, as you press the light button, located on the side of the watch. 745TDBanty 130619
It will immediately come up with blue colored led lights. Where you will see several LED lights stacked together to give a camouflaged look but at a blink of the eye you will see some of the LEDs’ blinking and that is the sign of the tall and short hand which are located in every watch, expect the digital watches. This watch is a marvelously handsome blend between an analogue and digital led watches. Furthermore, it has a glossy black stainless steel strap, with a top black brushed metal circle plate and it is adjustable on any size of wrist. Although, I am still puzzled with the its exorbitant price which is astonishingly $208. 42 and defiantly it is not worth that, in fact you can get a lot better and superior watch at this high price. I would recommend not to buy that and search for a better one but if you have a bulk of spare bucks or you are a bit snobbish suffering from some deep-seated personality disorder, then certainly, you are compelled rather maniac to purchase this lofty watch to satisfy your masked and prestigious ego and to show off your lavish social status. Kindly, do not resent my sincere suggestion as being advisors we are supposed to keep in view budget and socio-economic behaviors, as well.
